Guidelines and Standards to Support the First Aid in the Workplace Policy

These guidelines have been prepared to assist University Staff in their application of the First Aid in the Workplace Policy and to assist in meeting the policy objectives.

This document should be read in conjunction with "First Aid in the Workplace Policy"

1 - Definitions

First Aid The immediate treatment or care of a person who is injured or who becomes ill at a workplace.
First Aid Attendant An employee of the University holding at least a Senior First Aid training certification and appointed by their Division or Office as responsible for the provision of First Aid services and facilities.
Volunteer First Aider An employee of the University holding at least a Senior First Aid training certification who volunteers their services to the University as a First Aider.

2 - Policy Objectives

The expected outcomes of this policy shall be that:

  • All Divisions and Offices have completed their analysis of first aid needs in the workplace and appointed First Aid Attendants accordingly;
  • The Divisional and Office first aid needs analysis is reviewed on an annual basis;
  • All appointed First Aid Attendants and Volunteer First Aiders have a current Senior First Aid Certificate as minimum training requirement;
  • Appointed First Aid Attendants and Volunteer First Aiders are published on the University Website and in the internal telephone directory.

3 - Responsibilities

Management shall:

  • Ensure that the first aid need are assessed in accordance with Section 4 of this Standard;
  • Ensure that adequate first aid facilities and services are available during hours of operation;
  • Appoint First Aid Attendants in accordance with the General Staff Enterprise Agreement;
  • Provide adequate training (in accordance with Section 5), resources and time for First Aid Attendants to undertake their role;
  • Formally review the performance of First Aid Attendants as part of their Performance Development Review.

Note: Divisions must notify their relevant Human Resources Officer and the Health Service when a staff member is deemed to be a First Aid Attendant or if there is any change to this status. The Division / Office funds the fortnightly first aid allowance. A copy of the First Aid Attendants first aid qualifications must also be forwarded to the Office of Human Resources and placed on their personal file.

First Aid Attendants shall:

  • Ensure that their Senior First Aid certificate is current.
  • Attend to staff that are injured and provide first aid.
  • Establish a first aid post in the event of building evacuation.
  • Provide details to staff on how they can be contacted if requiring first aid. Notices shall be placed on staff and student notice boards and on first aid boxes / sick rooms within the designated area.
  • Ensure that during their absence from the workplace management provides adequate back-up coverage for the designated area and that the contact details are provided on the notices displayed in the designated area.
  • Assist management in the assessment of risks to determine the respective area's need in relation to the provision of first aid.
  • Regularly check and maintain supplies in first aid boxes and sick rooms in the designated area.
  • Ensure that sick rooms are hygienic and accessible.
  • Assist with the reporting of injuries as per the University's Policy on Incident / Hazard reporting.
  • Liaise with local Safety and Health Representatives and the safety committee (if one exists in the Division / Office) regarding injuries occurring in the workplace and possible prevention strategies.
  • Attend a minimum of two meetings for First Aid Attendants per year held by the University Health Service.

Volunteer First Aiders shall:

  • Ensure that their Senior First Aid Certificate is current.
  • Attend to staff that are injured and provide first aid.
  • Assist with the reporting of injuries as per the University's Policy on Incident / Hazard reporting.

Health Service

  • Provide expert advice regarding provision of first aid services and facilities.
  • Arrange in-service training and six monthly meetings for First Aid Attendants.
  • Monitor First Aid Attendant's performance in carrying out responsibilities (as appropriate).

Office of Human Resources

  • Arrange and fund training for First Aid Attendants and others whose job requires a Senior First Aid certificate.
